Bahrain Regulation Change – International Payments

The Central Bank of Bahrain has announced the inclusion of the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) as a mandatory requirement for all interbank domestic transfers as well as international payments.

The use of an IBAN becomes mandatory on the 31st January 2012. Payments without it after this date could be returned by the receiving bank and could be subject to rejection fees.

All account holders in Bahrain should already have been provided with a unique 22 digit number for each account. If you make payments to Bahrain we recommend you obtain this IBAN from your supplier(s) as soon as possible.

The IBAN can be included when customers prepare an International Money Mover payment but, at this stage, Users are unable to utilise the Validate IBAN functionality. Users should complete the payment instruction and not select Validate IBAN and process the payment in the normal way.

If you have any questions about this change, please contact our e-Operations Helpdesk on 0870 900 2070.

Upon investigation, some of these requests have been found to be fraudulent.

We would therefore recommend that you operate with increased vigilance when you receive a request to change your suppliers bank details, please ensure that any requests you receive are from known company contacts, or are verified prior to any change being implemented.

Please pass on this message to all colleagues who use the service.
